Veto Protects Patients, CNAs
Thank you, Governor Evers, for protecting patients and CNA training standards by vetoing Assembly Bill 76
Last week, Governor Evers took bold action to protect patients in Wisconsin by preserving training standards for Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs). By vetoing Assembly Bill 76, Governor Evers put an end to the Republican-led effort to slash required training hours for CNAs by half. This ill-considered change would have sent these critical caregivers to the bedside with far less preparation.CNAs and their patients in Wisconsin are better for Governor Evers’ bold move to safeguard our citizens from this reckless Republican-led legislation. With this veto, new CNAs will not enter the workforce with only half of the current level of training. Despite their doing the essential work of caring for our sick, elderly and frail, CNAs are some of the lowest paid healthcare workers. The only way to address a worker shortage in this critical field is to value the work our CNAs do by increasing pay and benefits, improving working conditions, and safeguarding their ability to join a union.
