The most impactful thing you can do right now to help stop this legislation is to mobilize members to call their Senator. Please broadly share our toll free number for the Senate ( 1-888-865-8089) so union members and our allies can easily tell their representatives to vote “No” on the AHCA.

House Republicans in Congress voted YES on the American Health Care Act (AHCA)  Friday.

The latest version of the bill is actually worse for working people than the original legislation.  Negotiations between the far-right House Freedom Caucus and Republican Congressman Tom MacArthur (NJ-03) resulted in changes to the bill that will allow states to:

  • Waive protections for those with pre-existing conditions so insurers could once again discriminate against people based on their medical history;
  • Opt out of regulations that require insurers to cover essential health benefits like maternity care, mental health, substance abuse treatment, and hospitalization;

To add insult to injury, the insurance plan for senators and representatives is exempt from these changes so they and their staff keep protections of the Affordable Care Act while the same provisions are repealed for the rest of us.

Read about the exemption *for lawmakers, themselves!* from Vox.

The Congressional Budget Office’s analysis of the original AHCA text projected 24 million working people would lose their health coverage.  The latest changes to the bill will likely increase that number.
