Union Veterans Committee- Local

The Union Veterans Committee (UVC)  in Milwaukee is known to stand in solidarity with veterans around the need for good jobs, quality of life, the care for our veterans who served, and a strong, fully funded and staffed VA.

On the UVC website and social media you can find resources for vets like the veterans crisis line, mental health support, connections to other veterans, healthcare, employment, and more.

Over the past several years, employees from AFGE Local 3 at the VA Hospital have faced countless budget cuts and union-busting attacks. The UVC works in coalition with other local groups to support turnout at AFGE rallies and days of action. Quality care for those who heroically served our country begins with supporting those who care for them.

Yearly over Memorial Day weekend, Union Vets participate in planting American flags for the “Field of Flags” at the War Memorial to commemorate lives that were lost fighting for freedom. 2,972 flags were planted in 2020 to represent Milwaukee service members who lost their lives in WWII. 7,056 flags were planted in 2021 to represent all the American service members lost in the 10 years since the attack on 9/11. Not only do we fight for Veterans that are living, but we fight to keep the memory alive of those who are gone.

In June, the Stand Down Rally for homeless and at risk vets takes place and the Committee works to spread the word, provide volunteers, and confirm vendors. The Rally features government resources, drug and alcohol treatment info, employment information, and more. There are event meeting points throughout the area to ensure that vets can get transportation if needed. 

The biggest event the Union Veterans Committee supports is the Annual Christmas with the Vets, celebrating its 35th year this December. Although COVID has changed the event, organizers go to great lengths to bring a little holiday spirit and cheer to those veterans who will spend the Holiday Season apart from family and friends.

Monetary contributions collected will go to purchase personal hygiene items, winter clothes, board games, books, and food. Each veteran will also receive a token amount of cash to purchase personal items at the hospital. Most importantly, we also provide money to the hospital to supplement the activities budget and give domiciled veterans the opportunity to participate in events outside the hospital. These activities allow veterans to enjoy day trips away from the hospital and give them a break from their daily routine, which is a real morale booster.
