Labor in the Pulpit, Bimah, Minbar

Honoring the Dignity of Working People

The Milwaukee Area Labor Council is again joining with the National AFL-CIO in participating in “Labor in the Pulpit, Bimah, Minbar” program this coming Labor Day. The Labor in the Pulpit, Bimah, Minbar program places union leaders/members as guest speakers in faith congregations to speak about the values of equity, racial and economic justice; the solidarity that labor shares with the faith community; and, how together, we can achieve a more just and equitable society for all.

We are looking for volunteers to visit a faith congregation sometime between August 26th and September 10th to speak to that group ( 3 to 5 minutes is fine, although some people have delivered the sermon/homily on that Sunday) about the connection that labor and the faith community share. You will be provided with a sample “speech,” talking points to create your own message, and a location on where to speak, which will include date, time, location, and contact information. If you have a faith home and would like to speak there, that is welcomed and encouraged. There will be a “training” session later in August to be announced. You may choose which session to attend.

Labor Day provides a unique opportunity for the religious community and organized labor to rediscover our common bonds; social justice, equality, the dignity of all people, racial and economic justice, and fair treatment in the workplace. It calls us to recommit ourselves to working together in partnership to be witnesses to actualizing these values.
